BIO
My area of research is agricultural management, at the interface of biophysical agricultural science and human /social research. I am interested in applying this to the industry and focus on developing improved farming systems to enhance farm profitability and sustainability. Several key issues for New Zealand farmers are of interest – future strategies for smaller-scale farmers, decision making in agricultural management and development and evaluation of agricultural extension programs. My work has shown that the majority of smaller-scale dairy farmers are comfortable with their current farming situation but have a slightly different managerial style and farming context to larger-scale farmers. Ways of sharing knowledge and information, within the industry are a critical part of developing farming systems. My work, within the red meat sector has included, investigating how industry stakeholders (meat company processors, farmer advisors and researchers, Beef + LambNZ and farmers) can operate as a network to increase the adoption of relevant technology and knowledge on-farm.
