I am a molecular ecologist with a particular interest in exploring the various ways in which organisms respond to a changing environment. Given the pace of modern-day environmental change, understanding these responses is more crucial than ever, especially for endemic, restricted, and endangered species. Predicting how these species will respond to change depends on their evolutionary history, and to answer questions about that history, I combine a suite of molecular tools and ecological data. I often work with DNA from subfossil or other degraded materials, but I also utilise whole genome data sequenced from modern tissues. This molecular data is a treasure trove of evolutionary stories, which I combine with ecological data to tell a bigger picture story. This can take the form of estimating species distributions, assessing fossil records, incorporating historical management information, or integrating ecological data from other species in the environment. I am also very interested in understanding the connection between genotype and phenotype, and the molecular basis of evolution in traits like flight and island gigantism.
