Broadly speaking, I am interested in how animals interact with one another and their environment under rapidly changing conditions, and how these insights could be used to inform conservation and wildlife management. My graduate students, and the post-doctoral fellows that I collaborate with, have investigated a range of ecological questions, using different technologies, including GPS (and VHF) telemetry, biologging, camera traps, and remote sensing. Whenever possible, my collaborators and I combine the fields of ecology and physiology because physiology can provide insights into the mechanisms that drive what we observe in ecology. To date we have followed this approach on a range of species, including antelope (e.g., wildebeest, Arabian oryx), and carnivores such as African lion and spotted hyaena. These interdisciplinary projects help us understand how animals are coping, and the extent to which they are able to cope physiologically in rapidly changing environments. While developing new collaborative opportunities in Aotearoa New Zealand, I maintain active research collaborations in southern Africa and elsewhere.
